• Java was developed by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems in 1991. • His Original Aim was to develop a low cost, Hardware Independent Language based on C++. • Due to technical reasons that idea was dropped. • A new programming Language called Oak was developed based on C++. • The language oak was developed by removing undesirable features of C++. • By 1994 the World Wide Web Emerged and Oak was Re-named as Java.

Java is a high level, object-oriented programming language released by Sun Microsystems in 1995. Java is Simple, Object-Oriented, Portable, Platform independent, Secured, Robust, Architecture neutral, Dynamic, Interpreted, High Performance, Multithreaded, Distributed. This java tutorial covers all the topics in java. In 1991, Sun Microsystems was attempting to develop a new technology for programming next generation smart appliances. The original plan was for the Star 7 operating system to be developed in C++ but rejected the idea for several reasons. As a result we have new language that was better for the purposes of the Green project than C++ developed by Gosling. He called the language Oak in honor of a tree that could be seen from his office window. James Gosling was part of Green, an isolated research project at Sun that was studying how to put computers into everyday household items like thoughtful toasters, sagacious Salad Shooters and lucid lamps. The group also wanted these devices to communicate with each other. Sun found that Oak could not be trademarked because of a product already using the name. After sessions in January 1995, The meeting, arranged by Kim Polese (marketing person) where about a dozen people got together to brainstorm with James Gosling, a vice president and fellow of Sun, and the author of Oak, the final suggest names were Silk, DNA, Ruby, WRL and Java by the team in meeting But the other names could not trademark. So finally JAVA was the name chosen this name was first suggested by Chris Warth. This is just a brief history of java programming language. This java tutorial is for the beginners.

http://javasolutionsguide.blogspot.com/2015/07/history-of-java-language.html
Let us see evaluation of one of the most used programming language today i.e Java. Java language project was started in June 1991 by team of engineers in Sun microsystem including James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton known by Green Team and lead by James Gosling. Java was originally designed for interactive television, but it was too advanced for the digital cable television industry at the time. But it was just right for the Internet, which was just starting to take off. In 1995, the team announced that the Netscape Navigator Internet browser would incorporate Java technology. The language was initially called Oak after an Oak tree that stood outside Gosling's office. However they could not continue with this name as it was already trademarked by Oak Technologies. After lot of brainstorming, team came up with few names like DNA,Silk,Java,Lyric, pepper,Neon,Dynamic,Jolt, revolutionary and few others. DNA,Silk and Java were among shortlisted names and finally Java was selected as final name from Java Coffee. Sun Microsystems released the first public implementation as Java 1.0 in 1995.It promised "Write Once, Run Anywhere" (WORA), providing no-cost run-times on popular platforms. Major web browsers soon incorporated the ability to run Java Applets within web pages, and Java quickly became popular. The Java 1.0 compiler was re-written in Java by Arthur van Hoff to comply strictly with the Java 1.0 language specification. Here is the history of all Java releases with language features included in each release. Thanks for reading. If you found it helpful, share it with others to whom it may be helpful.

Last week at JavaOne 2009, Atlassian Clover received the Duke’s Choice Award for Java Technology Tools. Clover was hand picked by the Father of Java himself, James Gosling, for it’s revolutionary Test Optimization capabilities. The Duke award was presented to Brendan Humphreys, Chief Code Poet and Technical Lead of the Clover development team as part of James’ Java Toys keynote at JavaOne 2009. Principle developers also include Slawek Ginter, Nick Pellow, and Michael Studman. Congratulations to the entire Clover team!! Last week at JavaOne 2009, Atlassian Clover received the Duke’s Choice Award for Java Technology Tools. Clover was hand picked by the Father of Java himself, James Gosling, for it’s revolutionary Test Optimization capabilities which can significantly speed up development. Clover is a Java software code coverage tool with test-level insight, instant IDE feedback, interactive reports and test optimization. Clover allows the Java Code Coverage tool to be superior over other coverage tools. More than just a coverage percentage, Clover provides insight into user testing by identifying project risks and quick wins. Clover identifies specific tests that cover various lines of code and automatically identifies which tests need to be run to cover any particular changes. And because of the IDE integration, all the power of Clover test insight can be harnessed without ever leaving your workbench. The Duke award was presented to Brendan Humphreys, Chief Code Poet and Technical Lead of the Clover development team as part of James’ Java Toy Show at JavaOne 2009. Principle developers also include Slawek Ginter, Nick Pellow, and Michael Studman. Congratulations to the entire Clover team!! Learn more at http://www.atlassian.com/clover.

Dr James Gosling on c|net news.com, March 19, 2007: The next big innovation is multithreading. What do you think will be the next big tech innovation that will affect enterprise IT? Gosling: There's a lot of stuff going on around multithreading--for example, the way that Moore's Law is shifting from clock rate to number of cores, which means people have to be increasingly conscious of what it means to build multithreaded applications.

https://dzone.com/articles/java-creator-james-gosling-leaves-liquid-roboticsb
After a long career at Sun Microsystems and an impressive run at Liquid Robotics (a Boeing company subsidiary), the pioneer of the Java programming language has officially joined the team at AWS. "It's time for a change. I'm leaving Boeing Defense (nee Liquid Robotics), with many fond memories. Today I start a new Adventure at Amazon Web Services." James Gosling, most known as the creator of the Java programming language, leaves his position as Chief Software Architect at Liquid Robotics, where he had worked since late 2011. Liquid Robotics was acquired by the Boeing company in late 2016. Prior to taking the position at Liquid Robotics, Gosling spent most of his career at Sun Microsystems - starting in 1984 and lasting through 2010 - with a short stint as a Google employee as well. His departure from Sun, which occurred around the time Oracle acquired Sun, was perhaps more than a coincidence. In interviews following the acquisition by Oracle, it was noted that reductions in status, wages, decision-making ability, and changes in role were all key drivers in his decision to leave what was to become a part of the Oracle empire. Gosling has published several books on the Java programming language and is at the top of the list on the Who We Are page of the Java EE Guardians—an independent group of people interested in moving Java EE forward. At DZone, we plan to keep an eye on Gosling's career change and the impact he will have on the AWS offering. What are your thoughts regarding James Gosling joining the team at AWS?
